America’s Independence Day celebrations are, by definition, always throwbacks to our country’s founding 240 years ago. But they can always be counted upon to take a slightly different flavor every year, as well. For 2017, we’re predicting a Four-Score 4th that will capture some of the highlights of the 1800s.

Created in 1812, the Uncle Sam figure will morph from a finger-pointing military-draft authority to a flag-waving celebrant of Independence Day. And sanguine will be the watchword, as rosy-cheeked 19th Century children are costumed as everyone from Betsy Ross to Civil-War drummer boys.

Usually leaning towards New England references, July 4th will add cotton bolls and farm boys in straw hats and overalls in 2017. These lovable figures would look equally at home in the South or the wide-ranging Midwestern States. Other quaint details will include door wreaths with cutouts, floral festoons, ribbon garlands, brass-band horns, and decorative drums.

By 1824 the concept of party politics was well established in the US, so expect red-white-and-blue elephants and donkeys to play key roles in Independence Day 2017 décor. And the cuter the better! Meanwhile, such down-home fabrics as cotton, canvas, denim, twill and felt will be absolute musts, and faded hues will play essential parts in this retro theme.
